Today there seems to be a huge brouhaha over posting and content. Why? I understand that Oppo is primarily an automotive blog. But let's be honest, it has never been as focused as Jalopnik. There has always been unrelated content on Oppo, myself guilty of posting such things. Why is it suddenly such a huge issue? If you want an exclusively car-related blog, go to Jalopnik. I think that an Opponaut should be able to post Hot Wheels stuff, as well as any interesting life news he feels is worth sharing. Hopefully we won't come to the point of not allowing non-car related content on this site.
Here's a GT-R so that this is "car-related content".

I'm all up for a good balance. Maybe 7/10 posts about Cars, and the other 3/10 about NSFW and Foodlopnik and that type of thing.

To be more precise, what there actually tends to be by this point is a brouhaha about a brouhaha. Because, not to put too fine a point on it, people like you make their own posts instead of leaving a comment on one of the previous posts.
If you want a brouhaha, make your own. I did.

No idea, it's been brought up a few times recently, but I'm not sure why. People who think that how Oppo is now is not how Oppo should be don't get what the entire purpose of Oppositelock is in the first place. It's supposed to be more or less off topic (while still pertaining to cars), and thats what it is. Some cars, some other stuff. Not sure how thats confusing.

Whoah whoah, there's no problems here. The only rule is there is no rules! err...except don't be a dick and the whole proper lead photo and proper tagging for NSFW. Oppo is anything goes, car related or not. You are probably referring to a few people opinions of what Oppo should be like to which (no offense meant) I don't care about because I live my life a quarter mile at a time.

I'm new here, but I do like your stance. Jalopnik is car related news or other car interesting items. Oppo is, how I view it, is for and about the car enthusiast. now that same enthusiast might be interested in diecast cars, posters, events, etc. As long as it's the car enthusiast posting, there shouldn't be a problem.

We're all here because we're gearheads. Thus, most posts are car-related. There are no rules that state posts must be car-related though. It's not that hard to figure out people.

I believe there are only 4 rules
1. Don't be a dick
2. Don't be a dick
3. Tag and hide lead images for NSFW posts
4. No posting pics or videos of fatalities
Otherwise, just skip the post!

Oppo has always been an off-topic blog. We go through cycles with different trends but basically this place will always be car focused. That being said, silly things and non-car related will be tolerated as long as it falls within the handbook. Every few months people throw a fit about there being not enough cars on Oppo. The solution is simple, if you want more cars or car related posts on Oppo, make more posts about cars. :)

Every few weeks someone whines. I don't understand why, I've never felt like something didn't belong . Sure not everyone likes the NSFW posts but they can skip them.
For example, I'm not into motorcycles. I don't normally care to read about them. Do I go and say "OPPO IS FOR CARS STOP POSTING MOTORCYCLES!!!"? No , I just skip it.

100% this, oppositelock is community based not like jalopnik which is like the official filtered version with real articles. If hotwheels stuff isn't your bag just scroll past it, no one is going to stop posting it if a few people aren't happy with it. I think people who generally complain about this don't realize what kind of medium oppositelock is. Although I usually like something more when it is car related, diversity is always a welcome sight because it adds a little variety.

I seem to recall that this isn't just a car site, it's for cars, and other things that us car guys like.. aka, anything we like. Guns, bikes, diecast, RC cars, bicycles, airplanes, tanks, ships, boats, food, etc etc.

The issue people have isn't so much that there is off-topic stuff, it's that people come here for a variety of topics and seeing the same off-topic is being repeatedly being posted (and usually by a minority) to the point of being an on-topic, and people start viewing it as spam.
So, for example, HWEP is probably the single most posted topic at the moment (I could also be totally wrong), but realistically speaking, every HWEP exchange probably doesn't need to have its own individual thread on the front page. It would work just as well if the HWEP was given a single thread/tag/kinja away from the Oppo main page with occasional advertisement to let people know it's out there.
Disclaimer: I am not at all against these things, and I'm not saying anyone is in the wrong for posting about them. However, considering Oppo's history of blowing its lid over this issue, it's probably in all parties' best interests to try to avoid conflict. In many respects, kinja is not a good platform for this kind of stuff, since it encourages making lots of little threads of small talk but has no provisions for managing popular topics, but that's not to say it can't be done.

Usually the people making those complaints have been around for all of 5 minutes, too. "What? They changed it? This is an outrage! I just got here 3 weeks ago and finally got used to the way it was!"

The thing about the hotwheels posts, or theme days, or gif dance parties, or any of these trends, really, is that they are cyclical.
The HWEP stuff only seems cray cray right now, but it'll die and be replaced by something else, which will also die and be replaced. Some things make resurgences more frequently but they always go away.
You almost always get some outrage right at the point before critical mass. I think we'll start to see the diecast stuff taper off in the next few weeks. And if not, then all my years of scientific oppo research were for naught and I will surely lose my valuable grant money.

I always saw it as a friendly community of car enthusiasts where there is some off topic discussion but generally linked to cars. For example posting about bikes, bicycles, model cars etc is all reasonably related and just something people like to discuss from time to time. That said we are cars enthusiasts so 8/10 of our discussions are car related anyway so there isn't really a risk of oppo losing focus as a car enthusiast community.

HotWheels are car-culture, thus car-related. Case closed. Go about your business.
If you don't like it, go post in the comments on AutoBlog. Then come back and tell us how horrible it was and you'll never complain again.

I like oppo just how it is thanks. It feels like a community! Sure we all love cars and that is what brings us together, but people should be able to post on whatever they like. As far as I can tell it is mostly about cars and that is good enough for me. I like the odd NSFW post, hot wheels find, planelopnik, whatever someone wants to talk about. Totally agree with tennisguy187 here, so if you don't like a post DON'T READ IT THEN.
Just my 2 cents.

To be honest, although we are on a hotwheels fad, it will wear off. We went through a phase where it was all "theme days" and now we rarely if ever have theme days,. Then we went through a period where everything was Doge for a while.. People will get sick of the hot wheels in a little while, then we will all be on about something else.

Hahaha. I agree. HWEP is hot right now, but so was theme days, and we barely do theme days anymore because people got upset about doing theme days. Then we all did Doge. Such meme. Very Oppo. Many pictures. And now we do HWEP, but soon summer will be here (I saw a piece of open water on the river today, how about that!!) and we'll be doing other stuff.

Yeah, but they usually because of some shit storm related to people getting sick of seeing them (I.e what seems to be in the process of happening). If we tried to limit annoyances, we could let things like doge fade out naturally with no hurt feelings, and things like HWEP might have a chance to develop into an ongoing part of Oppo.

I have no problems with Oppo being about anything you want... I do have a problem with Jalopnik becoming a car/plane/boat/a few other things website instead of just a car site though. The past few weeks have been quite a bit less interesting for me as I don't come to Jalopnik to read about general news or plane and boats... It seems to be going back to normal now and hopefully it it does.

I think some people aren't intelligent enough to skip over posts they don't enjoy... They have to let all of us know how oppo should be a blog about only topics they appreciate.
